Athena Launches New Journal on Software Engineering for Autonomous Systems

January 25th, 2022

Athena International Publishing today announced the launch of a new journal in the field of Software Engineering. The journal entitled “Journal of Software Engineering for Autonomous Systems” continues what was previously the Journal of Automotive Software Engineering which ceased publication at the end of 2021. It is expected that the new journal will be open for submissions from the end of January 2022.

The Journal of Software Engineering for Autonomous Systems is dedicated to distributing research and industrial results in the field of autonomous systems and software engineering, as well as overview papers in this area. With the advent of innovative software, artificial intelligence and electronics, companies working on autonomous systems are applying state-of-the-art technologies to improve safety, user experience, effectiveness, efficiency and the use of vast amounts of data. The increased use of software and data has caused a paradigm shift by requiring these companies to develop their systems while using architecture and model-based techniques.

The scientific community tackles the development of autonomous systems by exploring the use of AI techniques to make the systems more intelligent, robust and user-friendly. Digital twins play an important role in the development of autonomous systems as they allow for explorations of new functionality, for simulations based on both historical and real-time data, and the exploration of ‘what-if’ scenarios. The development of autonomous systems is a collective effort involving multiple disciplines such as electrical and mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, physics and computer science. Research on the social aspects of collaborative design is getting more attention as well. These are just a few research topics that this journal aims to cover.

The subjects of interest to the Journal of Software Engineering for Autonomous Systems cover the important aspects of the field such as autonomous systems and software architectures, software process, quality and maintenance, safety and security, autonomous and cooperative design and behavior, intelligent data processing and digital twins. In addition to this, submissions on the development of, and challenges provided by, forthcoming and future autonomous systems, such as autonomous systems based on AI technology, are also welcomed. The journal aims to be relevant for academia as well as industry.

The journal’s predecessor, the Journal of Automotive Software Engineering, has published two volumes in 2020 and 2021 with its previous publisher Atlantis Press (now acquired by Springer Nature) and has been discontinued at the end of 2021. The archive for this journal will also transfer to the Athena International Publishing platform in 2022. The new Journal of Software Engineering for Autonomous Systems has a broader scope and a revised editorial strategy aimed at attracting more submissions, expanding the Editorial Board and preparing for indexation in key databases. The Editors-in-Chief of the predecessor journal, Mark v/d Brand (Eindhoven University of Technology) and Yanja Dajsuren (Eindhoven University of Technology) will continue in their roles for the new journal and a third Editor-in-Chief, Arash Saberi (TomTom), has also been added to strengthen the editorial team. The Journal of Software Engineering for Autonomous Systems is expected to be open for new submissions at the end of January 2022.
